MA Character Animation
Nicky’s film is about a woman who learns to live with the grief of losing her father. The character goes on an internal journey to where she has compartmentalised her grief – the defence mechanism she has created against emotional pain – in order to maintain her everyday normality despite the heart-wrenching circumstances.
Instances of grief is a film about a woman who learns to live with the grief of losing her father. She goes on an internal journey to where she has compartmentalised her grief – the defence mechanism she has created against emotional pain – in order to maintain her everyday normality despite the heart-wrenching circumstances.
This film is based on my own experience of my father passing away unexpectedly in December 2018. My intention with this film was to use symbolism and metaphor to create a relatable narrative onto which each audience member can project their own personal experience of loss. It represents the character Penny as she struggles to figure out how to accommodate this new emotion that never really leaves us. How do we continue with life as it was after losing someone we love? Penny travels through an internal space-scape to discover a giant creature. It sits, suspended in space, being pelted by flying comets in order to protect ‘normality’. The creature is the internal part of her that takes the hits from the comets, which signify pain, so she can put on a brave face on the outside.
The project was created using digital 2D frame-by-frame animation techniques to help preserve an illustrative, handmade quality to the film. I was inspired by female illustrators and filmmakers for the designs and to create a story with a strong female lead and hopefully a positive representation of a female character.
