Meet the Winners!

Six graduating students from Central Saint Martins have officially been crowned as the winners of the 2024 MullenLowe NOVA Awards!

From 1,300 graduating students, just six MullenLowe NOVA Awards were awarded to students whose work spanned art, animation, product design and fashion. From using natural fibres to create toxin free hair extensions to a beautifully crafted animated film, these stand-out projects are some of the biggest and best ideas in the world right now!

Judges, journalists, fellow artists and designers, friends and family all turned out in central London on Wednesday evening to honour the talent and excellence of this next generation of artists. The overall winner, runners up and recipient of Country & Townhouse Regeneration Award were chosen by a panel of expert judges, while the YourNOVA ‘People’s Choice’ Award was chosen by a public vote.

The coveted awards, now in their fourteenth  year, have consistently awarded exceptional work from creators that push the boundaries of creativity, innovation and technology from the graduating class of Central Saint Martins, the UK’s top art, design and performance school.

Jose Miguel Sokoloff, Global President, MullenLowe Group Creative Council said:

“Elevating emerging talent both within our industry and beyond is an amazing mission to be part of. MullenLowe’s long-standing collaboration with Central Saint Martins gives a unique opportunity to view the world through the eyes of exceptionally talented students, whose boundless creativity is truly inspiring. It’s both an honour and a privilege to be a part of their creative journeys.”

Bhavna Madan Mohan

If I Raised My Mother, MA Character Animation, Winner 2024 and YourNOVA, 2024

“‘If I Raised My Mother’ is a two-minute film that was born out of an argument I once had with my mother. I’d told her that I would break the cycle of unhappy parent-child relationships someday, and she said, ‘It’s not as easy as you think it is’. This film is my take on what I would’ve done differently if I’d raised my mother.”

Funmi Olawuyi

Eso Extension, BA Product and Industrial Design, Runner Up, 2024

Eso Extensions are plant-based hair extensions made from pineapple fibre. They offer a safer alternative to petroleum-based hair extensions, which have been linked to cancer. The extensions utilise natural softeners, plant-based dyes and pineapple leaves – which are often discarded – promoting a healthier body and environment.

Patrick Garvey

Crystalline, BA Fashion (Knit), Runner Up, 2024

“My final collection, inspired by Catholic guilt and Rococo imagery from my Irish upbringing and time as an altar boy, merging traditional Catholicism with modern spirituality. Utilising a unique crystallisation process developed over two years, I create ‘embroidered’ knits that symbolise a new spiritual connection through crystals.”

Joshua Obichere

Take Me To Freedom, MA Fine Art, Runner Up, 2024

“My work challenges the way the viewer sees Black masculinity when faced with the colonial history and realities of the Black male body. It’s an installation piece in the form of a skeletal timber ship, incorporating sound, performance, a painting as a sail and an embroidery piece, displayed separately.”

Izzy McCormac

I AM REALLY A KITE, BA Fashion (Womenswear), Country and Town House Regeneration Winner, 2024

“My collection ‘I AM REALLY A KITE’ is inspired by the British seaside, my childhood home. Through six distinct looks, I aim to capture the emotion and movement of being swept up by the wind, evoking a child-like, untainted feeling of joy. Using an experimental process-driven approach, I push the boundaries of traditional garment design by working with paper. Just like a child, I make something with all my passion and conviction but with no worries of what happens next – I do it because I love it.”

Huge congratulations to all the finalists and winners on their incredible projects!
