Catching up with George Harvey

FAD Magazine managed to have a quick chat with the 5 finalists of the MullenLowe NOVA Awards 2023 here we have George Harvey from the MA Fine Art Digital course at Central Saint Martins who was chosen for his Entities project.

Can you tell us about your practice and/or project

Before starting at Central Saint Martin’s I was working as a commercial photographer and director. I started my masters to expand my research, explore new ideas and begin working with video in an architectural context. I was interested in finding a way to bring digital media back into the physical world.

Having completed my masters, my practice will now incorporate; photography, moving image, CGI, sound and large-scale digital installation. All of these were showcased in my MA project Entities.

Entities is an audiovisual exploration into our individual perception of reality. Examining the two fundamentals of life: Energy and Time, Entities investigates our unique understanding of the conscious mind and our respective interpretation of existence.

The 3mx10m artwork was shown in a large warehouse space in London with six large LED panels each displaying a performer. Each performer was recorded dancing to their own chosen piece of music and, using high-speed cameras, filmed in their own unique timeframe. Entities visually represents our individual perception of time, a rhythm which many refer to as our song.

What was the best thing about your time at Central Saint Martins?

To spend two years with fellow artists, engaging in conversation and supporting each other through the highs and lows of our artistic journeys has been incredible. It was amazing to have honest feedback from people who really knew me and understood my work. This is something I have never had before and will miss. Along with the incredible artists I had the privilege of being supported by my tutor, Jonathan Kearney, who is simply the most inspiring, generous and caring person I have ever met.

What plans / aspirations do you have for 2023 and beyond?

I will tour my installation whilst also continue to develop further works which will launch in 2024. I have always benefited from a balance between commercial and artistic projects so will continue to work as a commercial image maker as I develop my new works. Further to that, I have the intention to set up a small consultancy agency that helps companies develop new ways to present video within physical spaces.

What does winning a MullenLowe NOVA Award mean to you and in what way can organisations support graduate creatives more?

Simply having someone take the time to view and reflect on my work is a huge honour for me, but the most incredible part of the MullenLowe NOVA Award was the opportunity to meet the other shortlisted talents and to hear about their fascinating projects. Listening to them talk about what they had been working on made me realise that organisations simply need to take more time to look at what the students at CSM are up to. There are some incredible minds at Central Saint Martins, the more exposure they are given the better.

Do you think you will stay in London to develop your practice/ career?

Although I wish to work internationally, I will always keep London as a base for both my artistic and commercial projects. London is and always will be my home.
